Phenomenology place
Phenomenology is the interpretive study of human experience. The aim is to examine and to clarify human situations, events, meanings, and experiences as they are known in everyday life but typically unnoticed beneath the level of conscious awareness. One of phenomenology’s great strengths is seeking out what is obvious but unquestioned and thereby questioning it. To uncover the obvious, we must step back from any taken-for-granted attitudes and assumptions, whether in the realm of everyday experience or in the realm of conceptual perspectives and explanations, including the scientific.
Based on the article by Christian Norburg-Shulz, “Phenomenology of place” described as how natural and constructed environments, works together as a set of complex and “concrete phenomena”, which affect human perceptions, experiences, and emotions. “Concrete phenomena”, describe as what content of existing selected site “given” to us, can be human, nature environment and etc. Preferably, “place” is actually more than just an abstract location of site or it’s immediate context. In fact, it represent as “physical thing”, to determine environmental factor, or essence of a place.
From my design project ,we are doing artist village project ,the site are located in Balik Pulau , Penang. The project is to turn an old Chinese village house into artist village , it is actually more into adaptive reuse , we reuse the site , existing building , and the material . This is to remain the feeling of the Kampung place ,so that can let the artist to get more inspiration and experiencing the feel of kampung life .
In my project , I remain the structure of the building , the façade , but I change the space and circulation . I create a staircase in the living room of existing building to connect to outsider upper corridor , so that when step into the staircase the people can experience the old of the building , and after get outside they can experience the new . The site surrounding is full of green so in my concept , is actually about the view , when the people get to the top of upper corridor , the direct view always the green first , then only the others new building . Moreover , I create an open space on the top of café , the propose of this is to let the visitor and artist to experience the surrounding of site , the feeling of the kampung taste , in the same time there are also can experience the old to new design of the artist village.
I develop from the chinese house around Penang and I create a central courtyard , to control the human circulation , so they will not get lost and in the same time , there can be a activity space . In the courtyard there a few tree , is actually to control the ventilation and sunlight in the courtyard .
’’The significance of peace in human experience goes far deeper than this is apparent in the actions of individuals & groups,their places against outside force of destruction''.
From my project , I can categories my design as place-based , instead of designing a space for artist , I think artist more need is the place , a place of space to let them feel and find their inspiration . In my view , architecture is design for human need , as the same time , there were also need to consider the place cultural and element , so that we can design the architecture that belonging the place ,not just designing the building that can place anywhere.
