Proportion & Organization
From the studies of the three articles, this are the understanding about;
Spatial geometry : Affects acoustics and views, as well as one’s sense of
enclosure or openness.
Spatial proportion : A proper or desirable relationships of symmetry.
Be used to imply different uses - a long, low, narrow space.
For example, suggests movement, while a space that is more cubic, more equal in length, height, and width.
A sense of bigness or smallness.
Spatial Organization : Determines separation or connection between similar or
dissimilar uses, helps to clarify aspects of use, such as
public vs. Private, and establishes similarity or contrast
between spaces such as qualities, scale, material.
Spatial geometry,Proportion and organization still a topic that being discuss in architecture filed since centuries to nowadays. This two terms are always the basic consideration in architecture design, which its have a big impact towards the visualization and human feeling in a structure.
What is the role of proportion and organization in architecture today?
Nowadays, architecture are more concern in seeking for the proportional relationship between the space and also size of human body. For organization, it can be describe by the impact of spatial environment towards the health, mind and behavior of the human. Organization will also direct affect the circulation of building. The combination of both, which it is a main factor that will affect the quality of human space and daily life. For example, the proportion and organization of the entrance will always bigger, which it serves as a public welcoming and waiting space for the people, but for kitchen, the proportion and organization will be smaller.
From the description, we can understand that different spaces have its own content and language. There is always the reason why the space is narrow or high, which several space will serve different feeling and also different human anthropometry, human habitation and also function. Here are some contemporary case study about the proportion and organization.
There are two causes of beauty-natural and customary. Natural is from geometry consisting in uniformity, this is equality and proportion. Customary beauty is begotten by the use, as familiarity breeds a love for things not in themselves lovely. --- Sir Christopher Wren, Parentalia
from the philosophical text by Colin Rowe
The project 深深.深宅 ShenZhai loacted in Jiangnan, China by SU Architects. The architect purposely enlarged the longitudinal scale of circulation, scenic views and even timeline through the strategic transition and composition of spaces, in order to form a spacial pattern of wide depth spaces, on the existing long and narrow site. The project derived a consequence that a garden house with three different hierarchies of deep depth spaces.
First “Deep” - Prolog
The site located in the countryside with long depth.
(The building itself integrates well with the site which create a right proportion)
Second “Deep” - Space Arrangement
Volumn analysis of the functions and courtyards.
4 building volumes and 10 “vacant” garden.
(The spatial organization start with vacant then continue with volumes. The architect organize well which all spaces have their own respective function. Besides, it creates not only visual pleasure but also the human feeling in the space.)
Third “Deep” - Visual Connection
Zigzag spaces create deeper visual experience.
(With the right proportion in every spaces, which create a visual experience when users stand in any place.)
In the others hand, the compact living at HongKong, which create an uncomfortable living for the users where there is only a single space that need to carry all routine activities. As a result, a right spatial proportion and spatial organization is crucial in architecture.
In conclusion, Spatial proportion and spatial organization are crucial in architecture design today. Not only for visual pleasure and human comfort but also a base of building life span. As what Le Corbusier stated “proportion provokes sensation”.
