“Define and Infinite”
Charlie Sutherland, a London architect that graduated at the Mackintosh School in Glasgow.
Sutherland joined the office of the late Sir James Stirling upon graduating, and worked on a number of international commissions and competitions including the Tokyo Forum, The Paris Library and the Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore. Following the untimely death of Stirling, Sutherland was invited to join Renzo Piano’s office in Italy to work on the competition for a new performing Arts Centre in Rome.
In spite of winning the competition Sutherland decided to return to the United Kingdom. In 1997, Sutherland and his long term colleague, Charlie Hussey established Sutherland Hussey Architects.
During his pam talk he gave us “define and infinite” as his lecture. The lecture is about how he define the space and how apply his design into the site , how the material blend into the site .He gave us some case studies design by him to show us the example about his design concept and his design development .
AN TURAS
A Scottish Arts Council funded project for Architect, Artist and Engineer to collaborate in making a structure for the island of Tiree. Located near to the pier, the structure is intended to act as a ‘shelter’ whilst waiting for the ferry. It is hoped that it will reflect some of the qualities of the island, the big sky and horizon, the white beaches, the monochromatic black houses dotted over the land -all distilled as a line in the landscape.
The building is experienced as a 3-part spatial sequence:
- The White Walls; open to the sky but sheltered from the wind.
- The Bridge; protected from the weather, closed to the sky and the horizon but open to the rock and sand of the beach below.
- The Glass Box ; a complete panorama, looking out along Gott Bay and beyond.
In my opinion , from Charlie design concept ,he design with define the quality of space and the initial of site context , the building are success blend the building into nature , the structure of building of frame are success connection the building to the the sky and make the initial of view
THE LOVESHACK
The site for this modest little cottage is located on the shore of Lake Windermere on a steeply sloping wooded copse by the edge of Cunsey village. For materials, the main body of the building is clad in vertical timber boarding. The materials selected for the building are in sympathy with the surrounding woodland. From the diagram below, we can see that the whole building can merge to the site even the use of materials.
From this design , we can see that Charlie try to tell us the importance of the chosen of material , the building look simplicity but it success blend into the site ,he define the slope of the contour and make the weakness into a benefit of his design , he study a lot of the site context and following the data to design his building.
CHENGDU MUSEUM
The proposed site for the new Museum sits along the full extent of the west edge of Tian Fu Square to form one complete edge of the most important public space in the City. The singular facade helps to create a cohesive edge to an otherwise disjointed square.
The proposal includes a new undercover outdoor space - a monumental opening through the building offering a large covered outdoor space where people can gather, cultural events can take place and the market stalls can extend beyond the street located to the rear of the building.
In conclusion , Charlie strongly mention about the site context , the building is create by human is alive not dead item , so we have to designing a building that with soul , to design a building with soul we have to blend the building into site , because the site are create by nature , the nature is alive .From my view , Charlie is very strong with define the form of building and designing the initial of site . Charlie make me think a lot of the site , and how to apply the building to the site , the site is always importance because the form of the building can be change easily but then the environment of site are hard to change .
