Scenario & Situations

PAM Public Lectures at MAP@Publika Black Box, start with the quote “ Design not only profession, is an attitude”, and there is where the ex-assistance from Mr. Hatta come on stage to give a short introduction of Mr. Hatta. She claimed that Mr. Hatta is a designer, painter, sculpture and artist and he treat “Art as his lifestyle”. Mohd Hatta Ismail born from Kuantan, Malaysia and he has his own design firm “DIA”.

“DIAATELIER DIATELIER DI ATELIER . A more appropriate is ATELIER DIA . ATELIERDIA are of one ENTITY derive OF FRENCH ORIGIN astelle - basically mean STUDIO atelier”

From the beginning of the talk, He start to talk with his Art and Craft, the bowl art which he call it ask papier mache bowl. He has been using bowl to experience with different materials and senses. The materials mostly is being recycle. He might no idea with what he is doing at first, but he is enjoying the process of practicing and experiencing with different materials and try to understand different material. When there are people asking him, he answer

“ Hundred times of practicing help to achieve perfectionist”.

Then he moves on to his painting art. He shows us accordingly from the first painting, he express the ‘form’ and change to focus on ‘space’ at the second painting. After that, he says that bright color indicate the surface & material. In the end of his painting, he tends to not focus on shape and form, but more to feeling and thinking. Different people may have different perspective towards the art painting, for me, I think Mr. Hatta painting is more to minimalism and simple to understand.

Come to his Architecture, He shows us some example such as Muzium Sultan Abu Bakar, Pekan, Pahang. Mr.Hatta claimed that he likes to “taking off thing” instead of adding more thing in. He tend to used the space purely and naturally.

What I really appreciate his work is the Silalima retreat house at Alor Akar. Different from the normal residential we know, He designed the front of the house with a pond instead of parking lot. This is because he is designing for User to feel peaceful and comfortable. Beside, the pond actually helps in introduce the air ventilation and cool down the building during the hot day. The living room also renovated to be a reception area.

Hatta mention that he like to slicing the space. He designed the space with less windows and more prefer with pivot door cause he think is more efficiency than other types of door. What I realize is that, most of the spaces that Mr. Hatta designed is connect with courtyard, which create a connection between the space with nature.

In conclusion, I think Mr. Hatta is an good artist and also in architecture. He is always passion in practicing and experiencing different materials to apply in his art pieces. In the end of his talk, he also advice us that we should “conscious into matter”.
