HONESTY & DECEPTION
The honesty in today's architecture actually acts as an important role because it preserve the structural functionality which involving in the “ The Lamp of Truth” mentioning that an honesty architecture will reveal its functionality by using handmade and utility of raw material. Honesty architecture should have an identity which embraces the innovative and imaginative work and doesn't have to be technologically advance like deconstructive building because architecture focus on its perfomance and sustainability where the asthetic feature has to be substract to avoid encountering the structural deceit as well as materials and surface. For example one of the architect in Malaysia, Ng Sek San, he used to incorporate with the nature as he prefer to construct a building by using raw material that could get from natural environment in order to apply to his building design so that the observers able to observe the texture of the original material and it provides a feeling of blending in with nature unconciously. I do experience one of his project building which is the warehouse 2 under the sekeping serendah retreat area and I really likes the building that is constrcuted with only structural system which it preserve the functionality of the building without adding in any decorative elements.
On the other hand, the role of deception in today's architecture does emphasize more in asthetic feelings and gain its recognition only the non-functioned feature which it is useless. As we know, people are pursuing an outstanding building rather than a simple one, with the technology it is able to construct a building that is using a different kind of material that is industrialize as to make it more visually attractive. Apparently, it lost the function where the elements is wrapping up the existing structure without providing any sustainability and functionality, besides that the cost is more expensive as they wanted to show their empowerment that they had the high technology to construct the building mechanically in an efficient way, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall which is designed by the famous architect, Frank Gehry.
In today's architecture, where the honesty of the architecture itself can be revealed in its functionality which a building that simply serves and consists its function such as to accommodate people and also the provide a sense of home do consider as a honest architecture, in contrary the deception of architecture mostly can be define as filling up with decorative elements and non-structural purpose as to imitate the structural elements in order to create a similarity and symmetrical outlook on the building itself. Some of the building conceal much of its internal existing strucuture where it only reveals its outlook by covering up with a non-supporting wall through a decorative way or to provide an asthetic feeling. These phenomenon actually can be observed in ourdaily life which the used of material to the building is accentuating the asthetic sense rather than functionality. Recently, what I can see is that only few architects are pursuing a simple and functionable building by using a natural raw material to construct a quality building, this should be concerned enough because the value of the original material may has lost which the development of the substitute material is increasing rapidly. This actually giving the challenges to them to compete with each other as to still preserve their own principle in building design. For the honesty architecture, it challenges with the natural material that should be considered more in its sustainability in order to support the whole structure, however the deception architecture challenges the efficiency in completing the work on time and also facing the difficulties in constructing a forms that consists very technical skill and measurement. These are the factors that the architect used to deal with.
