COMPLEXITY IN ARCHITECTURE
This is my final proposal (design 5) for my Diploma studies at Alfa college.
I was proposing and Eco-Information Centre at Kuala Selangor. My design goal for that moment is to increase the eco tourism and improve the awareness about nature environment to built a healthy and harmony ecology environment in Kuala Selangor because there is two main issue was happening. First, promotion for the attraction point is less. Second, residents did not appreciate the historical value of Kuala Selangor.
For this proposal, its more towards COMPLEXITY design.
First of all, the form and the protected membrane shape structure is not too common and rare found nowadays. This form is come from a scientific biological concept which call replication, action of copying and reproducing. I intended to reproduce and spread the ecology and historical content out toward whole Kuala Selangor area through replication. The form have unique timber support and membrane structure construction system (without using tradition element) and the outlook is outstanding compare to the surrounding existing building.
Based on 'Reflective Text'
which written by Robert Venturi,
he stated there :
'Orthodox Modern architects have tended to recognize complexity
insufficiently or inconsistently.
In their attempt to break with tradition and start all over again,
they idealized the primitive and elementary
at the expense of the diverse and the sophisticated.'
I have face a lot of hardship while designing the building because of the complexity which related to some physical requirement, I need to figure out about the combination of wood support and membrane design construction, in the same time, I also have to consider about the space planning in terms of circular arrangement and human and traffic circulation.
Compare to square and boxes or some simple form (simplicity form), I need to consider a lot more, including the harmony between the building itself with the surrounding traditional and modern architecture style buildings. But for this design, what did I concerned the most is more to the space planning inside which suit the function which provide information and knowledge about history and ecology system which happen in Kuala Selangor. For the form and the additional membrane is mainly design to attract people and tourist to enter to the building and also to provide some shading area for outdoor because there is few outdoor activities like cafe, garden. Beside this, this is also to show physical protection to the building because its actually not too enclosed to let the natural ventilation happen.
Complexity is not an easy job but its a way which leads design towards perfectionism. The more the problem solving, the more enjoy for the user in that particular built environment atmosphere.
'The desire for a complex architecture, with its attendant contracdictions, is not only a reaction to the banality or prettiness of current architecture.'
- Robert Venturi, 'Reflective Text'.
Today this attitude is again relevant to both the medium of architecture and the program in architecture.
Same thought as me.
