COMPLEXITY
I choose my semester 3 design project which is based on the concept of new village. The characteristic of my designed project is catogerize as complexity that could be observe from the outlook of the building. It is designed to serve the surroundings and consists richness of meaning rather than clarity of meaning.
The background history of the new village has been conclude and transform into an architecture therefore the importance of the value from the new village itself must be conserve. The reason that I justify my project as a complex building is because the influences of the surrounding houses which obtain variety of elements that is complicated and sophisticated. As I know, the new village houses are actually built in a messy way, which can be confine as a scratch building. Due to these influences, I came out with this design that makes a corresponding elements where people can observe the similarity in both.
From the plan drawings that I designed, it does represent a strong feelings of fear, segregation, isolation and etc, which inherent in the past, so I intentionally create different turning point on the entrance even in the main exhibition area as well. Instead of creating a complicating pathway, I did a clear pathway to accentuate the empowerment of the colonial that forces them to move forward but I purposely did an exit so that people will feel contradict on making their choices. Creating different way out around the building as to provide a free flowing plan but at the same time it embrace contradiction as well as complexity because I aim for vitality rather than validity. The new village building itself has a simple plan but with the addition of different material without consideration in a simply method makes the building looks more complex. I do apply this concept that is simple in scope but is complex in purpose due to the ambiguities of contemporary experience are expressed, for instance my purpose to make a structure for the cafe which is clear but in order to set at the specific place has to be concerned and how to make the local people to feel like it is their home is quite a challenge.
The intention is in my project stands on an important role but to create a phenomenon which the gathers of the people actually can create an warm or noisy atmosphere that really affect the building itself through the interaction between human and building. Lastly, I would like to emphasize on the space arrangement that is purposely to be created from a feeling of scared, fright in a darker space and slowly leading you to a brighter space which show a contrast between each space therefore to make the people that would experience the space to feel the diversity between each of the spaces but on the other side I used to designed it as to keep the warm feelings in the building itself as to serve the local people's demand.
